2014
A cross-cultural examination of fat women’s experiences: Stigma and gender in North American and Finnish culture
2019
In this manuscript, the voices of women of size in North America and Finland indicate that there is a shared experience of being fat. Based on cross-cultural analysis of our respective empirical findings, we argue that there is a shared Western fat lived experience that perpetuates a stigmatized gendered landscape of living with a fat body. The emergent themes tended to revolve around two similar contradictions—the phenomenon of hyper(in)visibility and a belief their fatness is a temporary or liminal state—both of which lead to an internalization of fat hatred. We argue that these findings stem from the tremendous stigma and mistreatment that both samples of women face in their daily lives.…
The redefinition of gender roles in immigrant women: the importance of local spaces in global processes
2017
ABSTRACTIn today’s complex, intercultural, transnational, glocalized world, linking conceptual analyses and theoretical representations to the empirical study of female migration also requires, among other aspects, acknowledging the importance of the arrival context in the redefinition of gender roles, since it operates as an area of opportunity or containment mainly due to a number of specific features, which interacts with women’s economic, cultural and social capital, to produce different results in the situation of migrant women. The context of arrival and the subjects, conceived of as actors inserted in social structures where they have scope for action, is the focus of our analysis. T…
Professional activism in journalism and education in gender equality through Twitter
2021
This article analyses professional activism by women journalists' organisations which, through their Twitter accounts, contribute to extend the value of equality between men and women, which is activism that embodies the ethical or deontological codes of this profession. The tweets of these groups not only propose improvements in the expression and writing of news, after reporting biased, stereotypical or denigrating uses of language by large Spanish media, but also recognise and applaud contents that dignify women or place them in the public sphere that they deserve. A content analysis methodology was followed by applying both quantitative and qualitative analyses to a sample of 7,424 twee…

Wem fehlt‘s hier an Distanz? Über Gender Studies als Beruf
2019
Abstract This reply shares the standard set by the discussants that sociological observation – especially in Gender Studies – makes considerable demands with regard to perspective. However, the reply contests that the discussed paper lacks a tolerance of inequality or is politically predetermined. Indeed, in contrast, it is argued that Luhmann’s difference-theoretical thinking lacks empirical specificity and that data gathered in private settings make higher demands with regard to perspective: The professional observation of gender differentiation requires getting not only political, but especially cultural and familial perspective. These are found to be lacking in the discussants. Their st…
